Everyone likes a good cobbler, right? Fruit baked into yummy goodness. Who wouldn't? Recently I found an old crate for a different kind of cobbler.
I found this little crate at the Shipshewana Auction Barn a few months ago. Last night I was preparing several crates for a coat of poly and dug this one out.
Most of the crates I find are in need of a good cleaning. I often find wooden boxes like these at garage sales or auctions. They usually have old tools, screws and nails and other rusty stuff in them. Along with a good amount of dirt.
This one was also falling apart. Nothing too serious. All it needed was a little wood glue and a couple of small nails.
Good as new!
I swept out all the crud with a whisk broom. I pick up whisk brooms whenever I see them at garage sales. I use them every day to brush the crud off of something! I also use warm soapy water and a small scrub brush to get all the dirt off. When it dried, I gave it a coat of Varathane Crystal Clear Satin Polyurethane. It does a great job of sealing the wood and often enhances the look of the wood.
Now it is clean and can be brought into the house and used for decorating. I used some leaves from the dollar store and some a few fake gourds (I don't use the real ones indoors) and it is ready for fall.
I have had the pumpkin on the left for years. It was made by a local stoneware artisan—Baumann Stoneware. I love it so much I keep it out all year long. You can see his work on his website. He has an Esty store and can be seen at many national art fairs.
